Icons of the North: Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art

Curated by Brian McAvera and S. B. Kennedy

The second publications in the series looking at the artists who witnessed the events which took place in one of the most turbulent periods of Irish History, between 1969 and 1994. It should be noted that there was never a ‘school’ of artists, but instead there was a union created through the respon

ses of artists to the problems taking place in Northern Ireland at that time. There was a distinct caution towards art which reacted to the troubles, on both the side of the artist, and that of the viewer. In terms of the artist, there was a multitude of questions to be addressed; how would people respond? Would people buy it? What will I create the art with? What vocabulary will I use? The nature and use of narrative also became problematic, and questions arose in terms of how to address this. The medium which artists chose to work varied from painting to
photography to assemblage.
